Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

Did you know that delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also commonly called muscle fever, is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise?  The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise.  It is thought to be caused by eccentric (lengthening) exercise, which causes micro-trauma to the muscle fibers

After continuing to do these types of exercises, the muscles adapt rapidly to prevent muscle damage, and thereby soreness, if the exercise is repeated.  DOMS is a normal phenomenon and should neither be a cause for serious concern nor deterrence from routine training.  So let’s keep stretching and lifting; a little pain means you’re making gains!
